10 ways to avoid Procrastination.

What is Procrastination?

According to Cambridge Dictionary : To keep delaying something that must be done, Often because it is unpleasant or boring.


According to Merriam-Webster : To delay doing something until a later time because you do not want to do it, because you are lazy.


Why People Procrastinate?

It's a fact that procrastinators feel real physical pain, Barbara Oakley's state in her book "A mind for numbers".

"We procrastinate about things that make us feel uncomfortable. Medical imaging studies have shown that mathphobes, for example, appear to avoid math because even just thinking about it seems to hurt. The pain centers of their brains light up when they contemplate working on math." And what we do when we see the pain in work, we avoid!



Why can't I concentrate? What wrong with me? Why I am Not Taking actions? Uhh, I have a lot to do!

Time is running and your allocated task is not completed, you are shouting your inner mind for not starting it early. You may make a commitment to solve the problem within the deadline, and thinking at the end, "where my time goes?". Well, it may possible you were spent the hours checking social media, reading E-mails or taking long Coffee breaks gossiping with friends. I must have to say, Time is limited for everyone use it wisely. Let's check out the 10 ways to stop procrastinating and start doing things that worth doing.


1. Recognize that you are getting procrastinated

Start accepting that you are getting procrastinated. Observe and analyze where and with whom you are spending your time. You can take pen-pencil and jot down where you spending your time, on what tasks that are less important. If you are spending more time on social media you can turn off the unnecessary notifications, limit yourself for using social media accounts, or try not to sit in front of the TV to get your work done.


2. Know why you are getting procrastinated

Well, Procrastination is not about time management, It's about emotion. I recently read Anthony Robbins book "Awaken The Giant Within" where he stated that, human actions dependent on pain and pleasure. You procrastinate because doing that work will give pain and suffer you, you will obviously avoid that work. Now, try to find pleasure doing that work or task, imagine the benefits you would achieve. Example: your will is to wake up early, make a list of Pain and Pleasure or reward you will receive when you start waking up early in the morning. And attach emotions of pleasure like waking up early gives you extra time to spend with your family, gives time to make breakfast etc. Attach emotions of getting the reward that you would never want to miss and you will never wake up late. Now you can start to find your "Why?" People with no directions spends more time on social media, watching TV. Jot down why you spend more time on social media, Watching TV and what you benefit from spending time with and what your loss.


3. Change your Environment

Yes, that matter. Your work environment affects your productivity. Do your working desk and your room look appealing to you? Do they make you want to work or do they make you sleepy? If that's the case, you should change your work environment. You can place small trees on your desk, stack your file well.


4. Break Your work into little steps


As we discussed earlier, we procrastinate because we feel difficulty and pain doing that task. If we slice our main task into small chunks and do small measurable chunk, it will help us to feel more relaxed, more pleasurable. Example: If you want to study the whole subject in one night (I used to do this on engineering exams), don't aim to study the whole syllabus, go by chapter-by-chapter, study those chapter with more weight and by the time you Face question paper you almost did with your syllabus. Set Simple achievable goals.


5. Take a Break


Instead of forcefully sitting for hours, schedule little breaks, intervals to make your mind fresh. Yes, it will help. Our mind can concentrate for 10-20 min. and sometimes for 5 min. subject to situations. You can take Tea breaks, short walk, calling your loved once etc. (Don't open social media apps, it will end up spending hours onto them)


6. Tell Someone about your Goal & Partner with them

How many times you make up your mind for new your revolution to wake up early, exercise daily and not stick to yet. Try this solution, find the right partner who shares the same interest and passion, may be one of your family members or friends. Share your goal, discuss with them the health and other benefits.


7. Set Deadline

We always afraid of failure, if you set a deadline for your work, in your subconscious mind the clock started ticking. The feeling of failure helps you to work with pace. Setting deadline will also help you to divide your goal into micro achievable tasks and allocate time accordingly.


8. Create Schedule


Yes, I previously prescribed procrastination is nothing to do with time management, but creating a schedule will illustrate where your time is going and where you have to spend. Also, remind you of which things pulling you back & their causes you can focus. For Example You can make a schedule for your upcoming exams. Where you have to study multiple subjects. You can make a schedule which consists of allocating time to each chapter and deadline.


9. Hang out with people who inspire you to take action

Having a Mentor adds more value to your success, even achieving goals becomes simpler. Make sure to choose an environment where you been encouraged for taking actions, people who suggest, help you to achieve your goals. Now you can't step back when you complete your tasks you have someone to celebrate with those moments.


10. Give yourself Rewards

When you set milestones, schedule your task, stick to your new habit don't forget to reward yourself. Establish a reward system, set up a reward for every small goal you achieve that will hardwire your brain for adopting new habits. For example, you are on a mission of losing weight, you are on a strong diet, suggested avoiding eating fast food, doing exercise, the possibility you got frustrated. When you set up a milestone for losing weight set up a reward to eat your favorite fast food once.

Well, having a mentor is good, if don't try to stick, seek out someone who already achieved the goals, re-clarify your goals, stop waiting for right time to start, Get Grip and just do it.
